Recess Indy, closer to opening
Over the holiday break from everyday life, my wife and I drove down 49th street to see a couple of new restaurants taking shape. One at 49th & Penn which still resembles a boarded up mess. The other, I reported on a while back. At 49th & College is the coming Recess. Here is the latest as of this morning, of the facade. Not sure if you are familiar with Philadelphia at all, but this stretch of College Avenue reminds me of the section of Germantown Avenue in the Mount Airy neighborhood. In both Indy and Philly, the demographics are diverse and eclectic enough that they should support good urban retail, yet it hasn’t yet taken off in either case. But if you go a mile further down the road, in Indy you get thriving Broad Ripple and in Philly you get picture-perfect Chestnut Hill. When I was last in Philly about 18 months ago, the Mount Airy stretch of Germantown Ave still looked pretty dead. Let’s hope restaurants like Recess prove that Indy can beat Philly to the punch.
